The Cowichan Valley Community Resource Bus is now on the road and bringing child-centred programs to neighborhoods all over the Cowichan Valley. Children can attend on a no fee, drop-in basis, to play, borrow Literacy Back Packs, toys, books and enjoy a nutritious snack while their parents have a chance to connect with community service providers or chat with other moms, dads and grandparents.
The Bus belongs to the entire valley and is the realization of a dream for community members and local service agencies and its development is being guided by a group of key stakeholders.
The project is also well-supported financially by the community. School District 79 is funding an onboard Strong Start BC Outreach Program; a $20,000 start up fund; and, a $30,000 annual grant for programming. Duncan Daybreak Rotary has committed $10,000 toward bus renovations and a $2000 in-kind donation of books. Success By 6, Aboriginal Success By 6, BC Family Resource Programs, and School District 79’s Family Literacy bring funding for the project to a total of $158,000.
If you would like to be part of this adventure in early learning, the project is seeking volunteers, as well as drivers with air brakes and Grand-Buddies (elders) to welcome families on board.
